Hylauronic Acid (HA) in Skincare
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in our body that helps to retain moisture in the skin. As we all know, fresh dewy looking skin is representative of youth whereas dry skin, lines and wrinkles are associated with ageing.
Our levels of hyaluronic acid naturally decrease with age, making our skin appear dull, dry and "tired". In addition lines and wrinkles appear more prominent, makeup is more difficult to apply, collects in the creases or lines and wrinkles or vanishes into our skin which desperately hangs on to any moisture it can find!
When applied topically, small Hyaluronic Acid particles can penetrate the skin and bind to water, providing hydration and plumping up the skin. Similarly larger HA molecules will sit on the surface holding moisture and hydration. Ideally we want a combination of both of these effects which is why at ISSADA we use a mixture of particle sizes in our products. Ultimately this provides a better outcome for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, than one molecule size alone and will also promote a more youthful and radiant appearance.
While, HA helps to improve the skin's texture and elasticity, making it look hydrated, smoother and firmer it has other benefits too. HA also has anti-inflammatory properties which can help to reduce redness and inflammation, making it an ideal ingredient for sensitive and acne-prone skin. Our ISSADA Pure HA Serum is also oil free making it perfect for acne sufferers and anyone looking for hydration.
Overall, hyaluronic acid is a highly beneficial ingredient and for that reason we also use it as a delivery system for other actives. You will see that Hylauronic Acid features in several of our serums, either to assist in the delivery of actives to the skin or to support and enhance them. I have already mentioned that HA is a good ingredient to soothe and calm redness, but Niacinamide and B5 are also high achievers in the redness department which is why we combined them with HA for added efficacy in our Niacinamide + B5 Serum. The good news is you can’t have too much HA!
Interestingly though there is another ingredient that works in a similar way to HA although rather than just holding the moisture in your skin it also helps your own body to produce more HA too. We have included this ingredient in our Newly Launched Elixir Liquid Foundation which is targeted to dry, mature and even rosacea skins. It is ideal for those wanting lasting hydration with a satin finish in their foundation. This wonder ingredient is Tramella Mushroom and you can read more about it here.
