Skin Acting up or Breaking Out?

Acne doesn’t just affect the surface of the skin with visible pimples and pustules. There is a whole lot that occurs beneath in the deeper layers such as bacteria, infection, inflammation, overproduction of oil and damage to the cell structure resulting in scarring. The skin is a complex system with many layers and different issues can occur within each layer. This is why when customising an advanced skincare routine, we look at the skin as a whole and work out how we will treat all of its concerns.

Suggested routine for acne and breakout-prone skin

Step 1 – Cleanse away makeup, dirt, oil and sebum build up.

Gently cleanse morning and night using Salicylic Purifying Cleanser from the Issada Clinical Formula range. This cleanser features an AHA / BHA combination of Salicylic and Glycolic Acids which will help to dissolve the blockage inside the pores.

Step 2 – Exfoliate and buff away pore-blocking skin cells

14% Glycolic Polishing Scrub will help to clear dead skin cells from the surface of the skin where they cause pore blockages that lead to pimples, cysts and pustules. This dual-action scrub offers both Physical Exfoliation (using beads) to remove dead cells through friction and Chemical Exfoliation (using salicylic acid and glycolic acid) to remove dead skin cells by dissolving the "glue" that binds them to other cells. This allows oil to flow more freely rather than oil glands becoming clogged, as well as preparing the skin for deeper penetration of active ingredients.

Step 3 – Treat the underlying problem.

Containing high concentrations of active ingredients, our go-to skincare product for breakout-prone skin is our Breakout Control Gel.  This will help kill acne bacteria, reduce inflammation and begin to repair damage within the skin. We also recommended using Retinol for its well-known acne-fighting power. If you are new to Retinol, start with our gentle strength 0.5% Retinol Serum before moving up to high-potency 1% Retinol Serum.
Niacinamide + B5 Complex is an excellent formula to improves texture, reducing pore size and it also helps balance oil production.

Step 4 – Soothe and balance hydration levels.

With any skincare routine, we need to be making sure we a hydrating and protecting the skin. This applies to oily skin too. If we don’t hydrate and protect the skin, you can send the sebaceous glands into overdrive and produce more oil to rehydrate the skin. Issada Clinical formula Calming Probiotic Moisturiser contains Probiotic Lactobacillus to deliver healthy bacteria to the skin biome. Like Probiotics work for the stomach, they also soothe and balance upset skin.

Step 5 – Opt for Mineral Makeup

There is no point in a good skincare routine if you undo the benefits with the wrong makeup. Mineral makeup is ideal for breakout-prone skin as it is non-comedogenic (meaning it won’t block pores), anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. Issada Mineral Makeup contains no potential irritants such as fragrance, oil, talc, dyes or nanoparticles. This allows the skin to breathe and allows the oil to flow freely to avoid creating pore blockages.
With our experience, we have seen amazing results using an active skincare routine but keep in mind that everyone’s skincare journey will be slightly different. Understand that treating acne is a slow process and sometimes the skin needs to purge (bring everything underlying up) before it gets better is a must.
Make sure you investigate other lifestyle factors too such as diet, stress, hormonal imbalances, cleanliness (touching the skin often, leaning on your hands, changing pillowcases and sleeping with pets).
