WATCH: Full lips are a total beauty buzzword at the moment! They’ve been long coveted thanks to pouty celeb beauty icons like Angelina Jolie, but have picked up SERIOUS attention recently thanks to Kylie Jenner’s well-documented lip evolution! A FAQ we receive all the time: “How do I make my lips look fuller without it looking really obvious and overdrawn?” So here’s the video – enjoy, Gems!
Issada may have been born in Brisbane but believe it or not – our brand grew up in Hollywood! It was on A-list film and TV sets (when the mineral makeup colour collection was but a twinkle in our CEO/Founder Fiona’s eye!) that Issada’s Couture Brush Set really started to command global attention, being used on celebrities like Beyonce, J-Lo, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss and many others.
Our very own marketing coordinator/LA tour guide Alex has been working abroad from the City of Angels for most of 2015, so she knows her way around town – but not before she was put through her paces. Someone had to take on the tough job of eating, drinking, swimming, shopping, staying and playing their way around one of the world’s most glamorous cities to bring you the best of the best!
Over the next couple of months, Alex will bring you her must-visit ‘Issada-approved’ hot spots from different areas around Los Angeles, starting with West Hollywood.
West Hollywood is all about extremes. Home to the notorious Sunset Strip – and weirdly enough – some of the healthiest lifestyle destinations in Los Angeles. Only in this ultra-hip pocket of LA will you find Vegan restaurants, ultra-exclusive fitness clubs and superfood-smoothie bars nestled among famously hedonistic nightspots and strip clubs! It’s only right to take in a macrobiotic acai bowl before your Lychee Bellini, right?
ISSADA APPROVES: Gracias Madre
Relatively new vegan hotspot and more upscale sister location to Hollywood institution Café Gratitude, Gracias Madre offers sophisticated and imaginative vegan fare and a phenomenal organic wine list. Décor is an indoor/outdoor twilight garden vibe with beautiful lighting and ambience. If dining with friends, order a few different share plates – you’ll want to try everything (but start with the squash tacos and the potatoes – yum!).
Gracias Madre: 8905 Melrose Ave, West Hollywood, CA
ISSADA APPROVES: Hyde
Late night bites and sophisticated cocktails in a sumptuous lounge bar environment; Hyde is the perfect place to warm up for the night with a couple of pre-drinks before heading somewhere more lively. That said, depending on the night, if you stay long enough it can be plenty lively enough on its own – you might decide to stay! It’s super exclusive and very private – the venue owners pride themselves on creating a discreet environment for their high profile guests, so if you get in – keep your eyes peeled for celebrities!
Hyde Sunset Bar and Kitchen: 8117 Sunset Blvd Los Angeles, CA
ISSADA APPROVES: The Mondrian Hotel
A rooftop pool moment is a quintessential LA experience, and my favourite is the Mondrian’s Skybar pooldeck, thanks to the gorgeous ambiance and view of the city. The roof retracts to do justice to the perfect LA weather, and delicious food (including an insane dessert bites menu) is delivered direct to your pool lounge, for the perfect day of indulgence, sunbaking and swimming. Anyone can use the pool – you don’t have to be a guest, and there’s no minimum spend on food and drinks. The only rule is that you look suitably chic (the door-people are discerning). And it’s first-in-best-dressed, so on arrival, throw yourself on the nearest empty lounger at any cost – even if you have to dive in and swim across the pool to beat someone to it!
The Mondrian Hotel: 8221 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA
ISSADA APPROVES: Robertson Blvd
Here you’ll find an eclectic mix of stores from high-end brands like Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, and Intermix (Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Diane Von Furstenburg), to quirky celebrity-haunt and almost touristy novelty shop Kitson. Then there’s Australia’s own (and Issada’s collaborator) Zimmerman (this store has seen the likes of Beyonce and Chrissy Teigen in the last few weeks alone), ultra-hip and edgy stores like The Kooples and Allsaints, and hidden gems like Gypsy 05, which sells a beautifully curated collection of yogawear, swimwear, resortwear and homewares. If you need to refuel midway through the day to bolster your shopping energy reserves, there are lots of amazing cafes, including LA-institution The Ivy – which is so reliable for celebrity spotting that paparazzi are permanently posted outside.
ISSADA APPROVES: Chateau Marmont
A bonafide Hollywood icon. Built in 1926 and modelled on a French Chateau, this hotel is brimming with charm, history and a lot of secrets. Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo and James Dean used to stay and play here in the heyday of golden cinema, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote from within its walls, Jim Morrison jumped off the roof (and survived!) in the 60s and a few years ago Lindsay Lohan famously racked up a $50,000 (unpaid) room service bill which resulted in her being banned. Even if you don’t stay at the Chateau, a visit to the garden restaurant for dinner and drinks is a must – just to soak up the ambience and do some star spotting. But unless you want to be politely escorted out, make sure you observe the #1 Chateau Marmont rule: no pictures!
Chateau Marmont: 8221 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90046
ISSADA APPROVES: Bootsy Bellows
It just reopened after a six-month renovation hiatus – which left a gaping hole in the LA nightlife scene. Co-owned by David Arquette, Bootsy’s is a rat pack-era nightclub with art deco touches and plush velvet lounges, and quirky entertainment like burlesque dancers, puppeteers circulate the room.
It’s the exclusive Bootsy’s ‘Backroom’ where the real action happens – a separate VIP club within the club, teeming with celebrities. Sometimes the Backroom stays open after close, and with a convenient piano handy – it’s not uncommon to witness a 3am private show from one of music’s biggest stars.
Bootsy Bellows: 9229 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA
